Paint it Black by Rolling Stones
video by Hector Santizo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4irXQhgMqg

I find the Paint it Black music video very interesting because of its use of editing, colour as well as how the visuals keep with the beat of the music. The video makes use of only three colours; Red, Black and white, the visuals consist of splatters of paint being thrown across the screen as well as streaks being drawn across the text and background. there's a part of the video where the beat of the song is used for the change in colours, the splatters and background change from red and black to white and black

This video mainly interests me because of its simplistic style as well as it not relying on actors or mis-en-scene, instead it goes for a different approach, relying on dark colours and editing.
Hurt by Johnny Cash
video produced by Rick Rubin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pwfnh5pc
Hurt is an interesting video because it utilises contrasting colours as well as older and newer videos of the artists, Johnny Cash, past. this video was definitely supposed to make the viewer feel upset since the video shows the life the artist has lived and the lyrics tell us that he has regretted a lot of it and how he and his loved ones will die "Everyone I know, goes away, in the end"
the video itself is interesting because it makes use of older footage and uses contrasting colours such as Gold then monochrome. The video also interests me because how, to me, it connotes a fear of growing old, seeing all of your loved ones die, and eventually passing away yourself. Just like the artist himself did not long after he made this video one year later.
Rap God by Eminem
video by Rich Lee
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbGs_qK2PQA
Rap God is interesting because of its use of editing and mis-en-scene. the video contains contrasting settings and colour. For example there is a sequence where Eminem, a white man, is in a crowd of black men, rapping, this goes against stereotype since rap music is usually accosted with black people rather than white. n interesting thing about the editing is its use of special effects for example there is a scene where eminem travels through portals.
This video contains a lot of high energy as well as interesting contrasting scenes, like a colorful tv screen to a dark image of religious drawings.
some of the sequences interest me, like the tv scene, because they can be pulled off with a simple green screen.
Life on Mars? by David Bowie
video by Mick Rock
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v--IqqusnNQ
Life on Mars is my favorite song by David Bowie, the video is unusual yet simplistic, the entire video makes use of lip sync, costume and camera angles such as high angle shots and zooms. i feel like this is a great way to make an interesting music video easily as long as you have good lighting and an interesting costume design.
This video is interesting because Bowie's appearance is very feminine, with the makeup and thin posture, so it could connote a message about sexuality or gender roles if you look into it. The use of direct address also has a hypnotic feel to it, Bowie's eyes draw the viewer in and keep them watching and keeps them interested.
Living Dead Girl by Rob Zombie
Video by Rob Zombie and Joseph Kahn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvsMPOfblfg
Living Dead Girl is a music video that takes inspiration from horror films from the early 20th century, more specifically White Zombie (1932) as it uses different characters; the Doctor, the Living Dead Girl and the townspeople, the video follows a story as text is shown in the style of dialogue in old black and white films, telling the audience what is happening.
this video uses the odd shaped buildings in old horror films, different coloured cameras with a grainy film like style to make the video look like a golden age horror film. I feel like this video was made to pay homage to the classic horror movies.

Hi James,
ReplyDeletegood start - you will need to add a lot more information though as I need to know about director, costings, screen shots with analysis of these your favourite five videos.
You tell me as much as possible in relation to mis en scene and shot types please.
All of this adds up to an excellent response and will aid you in creating your own summer video.
